Majority of computing teachers concerned their pupils know more than them

Tech-savvy children could be more clued up about computers than those who are supposed to be teaching them these skills, with teachers calling for more training and support around computing and the new curriculum.
That’s according to new research released today which shows that while almost three quarters of computing teachers feel confident delivering the new curriculum and more than 69% enjoy teaching it, two thirds are worried that their pupils know more than them.
The research also saw one in ten teachers say they have had no formal education or training in IT, while nearly a quarter (24%) admitting that before this term they had no experience of teaching computing.
And while after the first term of the new computing curriculum more than 69% of teachers surveyed said they enjoyed teaching computing, eight out of 10 of them called for more training, development and learning materials.
Their pupils agreed with them with 47% of children saying they thought their teachers needed more training and four in 10 children admitting to regularly helping their teachers use technology.
Furthermore, half of children (51%) think they know more than their teachers in some areas of computing, while almost 40% don’t think their teachers are confident teaching the subject, with a similar number saying there is not enough computing taught at their school.
