Funding Boost for Run on Sun Campaign
Players of People’s Postcode Lottery have awarded £100,000 to the environment charity Friends of the Earth to support its vital campaigning to promote clean energy and protect nature.
This funding has helped Friends of the Earth to launch its new Run on Sun campaign, which aims to make it easier for schools to run on solar power.
Friends of the Earth today unveils a new infographic showing the financial, practical and environmental benefits of schools being powered by solar energy.
The charity calculates that schools can each save up to £8,000 per year through solar panels – meaning more money to spend on facilities like libraries, playgrounds and nature gardens.
It says if all schools in the UK were run on solar power, every year they could collectively save enough money to pay the salaries of more than 6,000 teachers, produce as much electricity as burning 100,000 tonnes of oil, and save as many carbon emissions as taking 110,000 cars off the road for a year.
In the first few weeks of the campaign around 180 schools have already signed up to find out more about getting solar panels. Momentum is gathering after the publication of a new ‘How To’ guide that simplifies options for schools.

We’ll use this money to help schools to save thousands of pounds through clean energy – look out for solar panels going up on a school near you soon.”
