The new indoor Adventure Soft Play Area, situated in Gallion’s Reach Shopping Centre, Beckton.
It was founded by four women, all experienced parents/carers themselves, with backgrounds in Childcare, Law & Finance – making the ideal partnership.
Their objective was to create a safe, but challenging environment for children to exert their energy – and boy have they achieved that. The 3 storey high apparatus includes Giant Slides, Sports Zone & Separate toddler Ball Pond is a huge hit with little ones. They also felt that it was important that carers had the opportunity to relax, enjoy freshly made coffee and maybe a slice of cake whilst the children play.
Cookie’s Island opened Easter 2008 and has enjoyed a busy start, offering Mother& Toddler sessions, Group discounts and fully catered Parties for any occasion. They are soon to offer ‘Drop & Shop’ sessions where parents can leave their children for a limited period whilst they enjoy what the retail park has to offer – including Next, WH Smiths & TK Max. Obviously customers are free to stay on site and enjoy the tastes from the Cookie Cafeteria which serves a variety of freshly made coffees & hot snacks for adults & children. Cromwell Road London SW7 5BD 020 7942 5000 www.nhm.ac.uk TREE is a new permanent artwork by artist Tania Kovats, inspired by Charles Darwin. It will be unveiled in the Museum’s iconic Grade I listed building to celebrate his two hundredth birthday. TREE will be a cross-section of an entire 200-year-old oak tree, cut lengthways, including the roots, trunk and branches and inserted into the ceiling of a gallery behind the Central Hall. At more than 17 metres long, it will become one of the largest specimens at the Museum. TREE is inspired by Charles Darwin’s iconic tree of life sketch, representing evolution, from his transmutation notebook B. In 2008, 10 leading contemporary artists were invited to submit responses to celebrate Darwin’s two hundredth birthday and 150 years since the publication of On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection. The resulting exhibition of proposals, Darwin’s Canopy, was the first event in the Darwin200 programme, a nationwide series of events celebrating Darwin’s ideas and their impact around his two hundredth birthday. TREE was selected for commission from the 10 proposals and is also part of the Darwin200 celebrations. Admission: free. Nearest tube: South Kensington. As part of Darwin200 the Natural History Museum will celebrate Darwin’s birthday, on 12 February, with a day of free public events. For further information please visit www.darwin200,org

Graves Gallery Free Admission Spring 2009 sees the Graves showcase a series of prints by the masterful forefather of the political cartoon, William Hogarth. A veritable 18th century comic strip, Industry and Idleness tells the story of two apprentices, one who follows the ‘good’ path in life, Francis Goodchild, and one who strays from the road of the righteous, Tom Idle. These prints, from Sheffield’s own collection, offer a rich window on Georgian London and show perfectly Hogarth’s eye for detail and caricature. NEW STREET AND ARTISANS’ QUARTER OPENS AT BLISTS HILL VICTORIAN TOWN FOR EASTER
This Easter visitors to Blists Hill Victorian Town in Shropshire’s Ironbridge Gorge, will be the first to explore the magnificent new Canal Street. This is the first phase of a massive £12 million development and includes an entire new Victorian street and artisans’ quarter. Canal Street, which will be officially opened on Thursday, 30th April will be lined both sides with a wonderful parade of shops, including a Drapers and Outfitters, Post Office, Photographers, Sweetshop and Fried Fish Dealers while the artisans’ corner will include plumbers, tinsmiths and decorative plasterers.
From Saturday, 4th April visitors will be amongst the first to admire the hats and gowns in the Outfitters and Drapers, have their portraits taken in the Photographers, mail their letters and post-cards in the Post Office, select from a massive range of Victorian treats in the Sweet Shop and enjoy a delicious portion of traditionally prepared fish and chips in the Fried Fish Dealers. What’s more visitors will be able to watch traditional skills in action in the plumbers, decorative plasters and tinsmiths.
The shops along Canal Street have been designed and built with the greatest of care to ensure that they are authentic copies of buildings from the locality. Existing buildings have either been copied or archive materials, such as old photographs and postcards, have been studied to ensure that all the architectural details are correct. A variety of different styles of bricks have been especially made and mortar depths have been measured and replicated, bespoke window frames have been created and Victorian shop fittings have been sourced from across the country.
Traci Dix-Williams, Blists Hill Victorian Town Manager commented, “The team and I are delighted to see Canal Street almost complete. We have been working on this project for many years and it’s wonderful to see everyone’s hard work pay off. Visitors to Blists Hill Victorian Town will gain an even greater insight into the world of a small working town at the turn of the last century. Visitors are already getting very excited about the new exhibits, especially the Post Office. I think this could largely be due to a recent television programme being set in a Victorian Post Office. Once Canal Street is open the hard work continues as we will be opening the new Visitor Centre for the summer and other attractions in the autumn.
“This project has been a labour of love for all the project team including our main contractor Mansell. We could not have achieved these remarkable results without their help and the ongoing support of our major funders Advantage West Midlands and the European Regional Development Fund”, concluded Traci Dix-Williams.
Landmark Visitor Centre
Due to open in time for the summer school holidays, the new Visitor Centre will be housed in a remarkable modern landmark building, which will also act as gateway to the World Heritage Site. It has been designed with the environment in mind and inspired by many historic references such as the mammoth blast furnaces, which once dominated the local landscape; the building will also be adorned with giant fly wheels, cranes and boilers. As visitors ascend through the Visitor Centre they will be transported from the modern world back to the Victorian period by a variety of state-of-the-art exhibitions and displays. And as they leave the town, via the building, clever exhibitions will prepare them for a visit to the rest of the World Heritage Site.
In order to improve access at Blists Hill Victorian Town a new Mine Railway will carry passengers through the woods into a ‘mine’ experience. Here visitors will gain an understanding of the importance of mining to the area. Inspired by the famous Hay Inclined Plane, a smaller version will be built to transport visitors up the gorge side from the Village Green to the canal, once again making the site easier for all visitors to access.
Visitors to special events at Blists Hill Victorian Town will see a big difference to the Village Green, which will be extended to create a much improved space for the many spectacular events that take place across the year, such as outdoor classical concerts, steam weekends, Victorian wedding recreations and the annual firework display.
Blists Hill Victorian Town is one of the ten Ironbridge Gorge Museums. A Passport to all ten valid for twelve months and multiple return visits costs £19.95 for adults, £15.95 for the sixty plus and £12.95 for children (up to 18 years in full time education) £54.95 for families. For those on a shorter time scale, individual admission is available into any of the sites.
The museums are open seven days a week from 10am until 5pm; activities and workshops vary day-to-day and some carry an extra charge in addition to the museum admission fee, for further information, contact the Ironbridge Tourist Information Centre on Tel: 01952 884 391 or visit www.ironbridge.org.uk. The Gorge is easily reached via the M6 and M54 motorways exiting at Telford (M54 junction 4 or 6).

399 High Street, Brentford TW8 0DU After more than 40 years as an important feature of Brentford life, the world famous Musical Museum is about to re-open in its new purpose-built home at 399 Brentford High Street. The Musical Museum contains one of the world’s foremost collections of automatic musical instruments. From the tiniest of clockwork musical boxes to the self-playing ‘Mighty Wurlitzer’ the collection embraces an impressive and comprehensive array of sophisticated reproducing pianos, orchestrions, orchestrelles, residence organs and violin players and also the world's largest collection of historic musical rolls. The new Museum building, supported by The National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund, is arranged on three floors. There are four galleries on the ground floor in which working instruments are displayed, providing a superb venue to demonstrate instruments once found in large houses of the wealthy; there’s a street setting with shop windows full of music, musical toys and street instruments; a gallery in which exhibits explain how music was ‘captured’ and how instruments were powered; and a fourth gallery in which the exhibits will be changed periodically and which is designed to incorporate not only instruments and music but other local interests. There are workshops in which conservation and repair work can be carried out on the incomparable collection of instruments on the second floor and a library holding the Museum’s collection of over 30,000 music rolls. From 27th November the Musical Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday each week from 11.00-17.30 (last admissions 16.00). Television actress Aisling O’Neill, best known for her role as “Carol” in Fair City, will be in Ennis to help launch a new performing arts school.
Aisling will be joining staff, parents and children at the opening of the Clare branch of Stagecoach, the international part time children’s theatre school which boasts over 600 schools in eight countries including three in Dublin and two in Galway. The schools, founded in 1988 are famous for their no audition policy, small classes of fifteen, written reports and inspections with a minimum of three professional teachers and one Principal.
Each school recruits a total of 45 students. They divide by age into three groups and for the first hour, one group learns to dance, the second to sing and the third to act. When the hour is up, groups rotate. By the end of the three hour session, all students have worked at all of the disciplines taught by experienced teachers, mostly choreographers, professional performers, directors or musicians.
Classes will be held at Cois na hAbhna, Galway Rd, Ennis on Friday's from 4pm to 7.30pm and will offer quality training to 6-16 year olds. Stagecoach Clare will also offer 90 minute "Early Stages" classes for 4 to 6 year olds, as an introduction to the performing arts, which are also extremely popular.
Taking on the role of Principal for the new school will be John Lucey, a professional actor now living in Moycullen, who also appeared in Fair City last year. John, along with his wife, Eliz also run Stagecoach Galway and with the creative team of teachers behind them, hope to offer exciting opportunities for young performers in Clare.
The Open Meeting will take place on Tuesday 28th April at 6.00pm at Cois na hAbhna when parents and potential students are invited to come along to find out more, ask questions and to meet the Principal and teaching staff.
Please contact John or Eliz on 091 556274 for further information about Stagecoach Clare, or online at www.stagecoach.ie/clare

Exhibition Road, South Kensington SW7 2DD Pattern Pod is a hands-on gallery that was created especially for children from 5–8 years of age and their parents. Like scientists, children explore the world by trying to make predictions about events happening around them. It’s often easier to make these predictions if these events repeat themselves or if there is a pattern to them. Using truly amazing multi-sensory exhibits, this contemporary gallery looks at the many types of patterns in the world around us and encourages children to recognise and copy patterns – or create entirely new ones of their own. Like the other interactive galleries in the Museum, Pattern Pod also encourages learning through play and exploration, enabling children to develop key science skills in a fun and stimulating way. There’s something for grown-ups too with touch-screen displays giving fascinating insights into the science behind the exhibits and the ways in which children play and learn. Bubble Show. Explore the exciting world of bubble science, but watch out for the flaming methane bubbles! Energy - fuelling the future. Energy is the Museum’s latest interactive gallery. Great for children aged 7–14, and their teachers or families, it looks at our present and future energy needs and uses. The gallery is packed with thought provoking games and exhibits, which can be controlled in all sorts of novel ways. Explore how energy powers every aspect of our lives. Play with touch sensitive screens, giant spinning drums and dance-floor footpads to question and discover how we will meet the planet’s growing energy demands. Where does energy come from? What does electricity actually feel like? And what on Earth is a fossil fuel? Come and find out – you might be surprised by how much you already know. You can even join the debate by leaving your thoughts for others to see on the Energy Ring, a huge interactive sculpture suspended in the air. Launchpad, the Science Museum's most popular hands-on, brains-on gallery has been relocated and reinvented. Here is a sneak preview of some of the amazing exhibits that you will find in there. From firm favourites to world firsts, Launchpad will be packed with over 50 interactive exhibits, plus electrifying shows and lively demos, all from the wonderful world of physics. Launchpad is all about asking questions and making sense of the way things work. What am I looking at? What would happen if...? What do my friends think? How could I...? Ask your parents, your friends, or one of our friendly Explainers (who are easy to spot in their bright orange T-shirts). Launchpad is open to all, but is particularly aimed at 8- to 14-year-olds, plus their parents and teachers. Under-12s must be accompanied by an adult, and school groups need to pre-book their visit. Jones the Bones. Meet the eccentric surgeon Jones the Bones and his Skeleton as they take you on a wondrous journey around the human body. Jones the Bones will be able to answer all your questions about the human body, from what happens when you swallow your food, to why we fart. He’ll also supply you with a healthy dose of horrible and gory facts you can impress your friends with.
