In the Edwardian period, May Day was second only to Christmas in popularity & each town or village all over the country would have its own range of traditions and customs. Find out more about the customs of May Day, including how a 1900s Pit Village would have prepared for May Day as sprigs are placed on the doors of the Francis Street cottages in a tradition called May birching.
