Historic Royal Palaces brings the past to life through schools’ programme

Historic Royal Palaces (HRP) has started taking bookings on its schools’ programme for the next academic year, inviting schools to experience history where it happened in six major palaces around the UK.

HRP is an independent charity that looks after Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, Banqueting House Whitehall, Kensington Palace, Kew Palace and Hillsborough Castle.

The schools programme is designed to excite and inspire teachers and pupils, using the palaces and their stories as inspiration. The programme targets key stages 1 – 5 including special schools, and offers rich and varied cross curricular opportunities for pupils, enabling them to be immersed in history where it happened.

At the heart of the programme, is an extensive range of facilitated learning experiences on site at the palaces. Also on offer to schools is a rich collection of teacher resources online and a creative Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme which includes free familiarisation days for teachers to support their planning for a visit.

This year, HRP has introduced a brand-new GCSE offer. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the Normans, Elizabeth I and the Historic Environment through in-depth studies which encourage critical examination of primary source material.

Alison Lightbown, Head of Explorer Programmes at Historic Royal Palaces said: “We are delighted to bring the past to life through our schools’ programme, and can’t wait to welcome more visits from schools all over the UK. We believe immersing teachers and pupils in these incredible historic environments, will fire their imaginations and strengthen their skills and knowledge across the curriculum.”

Sign your school up for a visit to one of the six Historic Royal Palaces in the UK, the first 500 schools to sign up will win a Historic Royal Palace A2 poster.
