Celebrate International Olympic Day with free adidas t-shirts from Get Set

Get Set, the official youth engagement programme from the British Olympic Association and British Paralympic Association, is celebrating International Olympic Day on June 23rd with fun activity ideas for schools and a chance to win free adidas t-shirt packages.

International Olympic Day is a birthday celebration marking the founding of the modern Olympic Games by Pierre de Coubertin and the setting up of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on June 23
rd, 1894.

The goal of International Olympic Day is to promote participation in sport across the globe regardless of age, gender or athletic ability. On the day, people of all ages and abilities – from Albania to Zimbabwe, Lausanne to Olympia – will celebrate Olympic Day by joining in a sport or cultural event.

This year, schools and young people are getting involved through the three Olympic Day pillars: learn, move and discover.

Top athletes back International Olympic Day

Top Team GB athletes from a range of Olympic sports have been backing the importance of International Olympic Day.

Team GB taekwondo gold medallist Jade Jones said: “Olympic Day is great because it gives kids the opportunity to try out different sports that they usually wouldn’t think to have a go at. I tried quite a few when I was younger and none really clicked until I found Taekwondo. It’s taught me so much along the way and I’ve gotten to meet some incredible people. The Olympics have played a huge part in my life, I did the Youth Olympic Games when I was 17 and then competed at London 2012 at 19 – I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.”

Team GB gymnastics bronze medallist Nile Wilson said:
“Olympic Day is all about using the excitement of our sport to get people around the world more active, to educate them about the Olympic Values and to bring communities together. In that sense, sport, culture and education come together on Olympic Day. I would definitely recommend every school in the UK takes it as an opportunity to introduce their pupils to new sports and skills.”

Team GB women’s hockey gold-medallist Susannah Townsend said:
“I’ve been lucky to have competed around the world, playing a sport I love and it’s opened my eyes to the importance of Olympic sport to the positive development of young people. We have often seen the Olympic Values being lived both at home and abroad, being embraced by different countries and different cultures. The power of Olympic sport can engage young people and we as sportspeople constantly try to help promote the values in what we do and encourage young people to live the values in their everyday lives.”
