Village Day visitor 2021

On Sunday 17 July, Stapleford Granary’s courtyards, orchard and gallery spaces will be packed with brilliant live music, arts, hands-on activities, delicious pop-up food and drink. Headlining this year are acclaimed global folk band MISHRA. There’ll be jazz from Ruth Applin & Josh Kemp, much loved hits from the 80s from young musicians Livvy & Joe, the ever popular Come & Sing Choir and a Samba Drumming workshop. New for 2022, our Junior Bake Off competition will be adjudicated by BBC Bake Off finalist Ian Cumming. The craft village will showcase work from local artists including potters, printers, florists. photographers, book-binders and basket weavers. There’s be craft activities for children and everyone will be fed and watered from our wonderful friends Boho Kitchen, Fired Up Pizza, Ocean Tree Fish & Chips and Toni’s Ice Creams. The Granary outdoor bar will be serving Pimm’s and local craft beers along with our usual selection and the newly created Granary cafe will be open!

This year, we’re very excited to bring an exclusive historical story to our Village Day. The story of the Stapleford Spitfire is little known. AFP Fane was a star racing driver of the 1930s. 80 years ago, AFP Fane's Spitfire was shot down in the field opposite the Granary during the second WW. We are delighted to be collaborating with Sandy Gunn Aerospace Careers Programme to commemorate the life of AFP Fane at the Village day. A display featuring a Merlin engine from a Spitfire, the restored tail fin of Spitfire AA810 and Fane’s personal 1935 racing car will be on display for visitors to see.

All this is set in the beautiful surroundings of Stapleford Granary, an award-winning conversion of a 19th century farm complex with enclosed courtyards, a small historial 1930s orchard and views across meadows. Admission is free and there is no need to book.

‘The Village Day has a very special place in my heart. This time last year, still in the rocky throes of the pandemic, we opened up the Granary to the community for our first ever Village Day. We felt that everyone was in desperate need of an opportunity to come back together in a safe, outdoor environment to celebrate and enjoy all the things we had missed so much - live music, theatre and the simple pleasures of eating and being together. It was a wonderful day, attended by around 800 people over 5 hours. Watching children spontaneously dancing to live music, families happily picnicking in the orchard, the beautiful stalls created by artists, little paper dragons (made at the craft stalls) being whirled around, I remember thinking, THIS is what the Granary is all about and who is it for. I do hope you can join us on Sunday 17th July - we’ve got plenty of new ideas to add to all the things we loved last year. We will always keep our Village Days free to enter - it’s a day for everybody to enjoy.’
