Heart 2 Heart Norfolk – getting defibrillators into schools

Heart 2 Heart, a local charity that fundraises to put defibrillators in all Norfolk schools and clubs, was established by local mum, Jayne Biggs, whose healthy and active 7-year-old daughter Violet, suffered a Sudden Cardiac Arrest four years ago. Thankfully, Violet survived by being shocked with a defibrillator, and has now been fitted with an implanted defibrillator.

Since then, Jayne has campaigned tirelessly to get defibrillators placed everywhere, and there are now defibrillators in every primary school in Great Yarmouth, Gorleston, Bradwell, Hemsby, Rollesby, Winterton and more.

Yet, many schools do not realise government funding is available to purchase a defibrillator. Currently, only 27% of UK schools have defibrillators and 12 children a week are suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. For details about defibrillators and free training on how to use them visit www.facebook.com – and search for Heart-2-Heart-Norfolk or call Jayne on 07585 604125.

Broadland High School

Aron Whiles, Headteacher of Broadland High School, writes:

“We are very proud of our exceptional school and would like to invite you to visit us in person and to sample the excellent educational opportunities we offer. We are a friendly, caring community which gives students the support to grow and flourish as successful learners and confident young people.

I expect the very highest standards from all our students and we encourage them to do their very best in everything they do, whatever their ability or personal circumstances. Students are put at the heart of every decision that we make at Broadland, promoting independence so that they become resilient young people, ready to take on all the world has to offer them.

From the very first moment students make a decision to choose our school to the moment they take their first steps into further education or training, we offer a rich, cohesive curriculum and a supportive pastoral system that will lead students calmly and confidently into adult life.

We would like to invite you to join our successful school, once again judged as a ‘Good’ school by Ofsted in April 2016. We very much look forward to meeting you personally to explain the unique qualities that Broadland has to offer!”

The dates of the Open Days are:

Finnbar’s Force at Eaton Vale Activity Centre on Sunday 10th September

Finnbar’s Force is a charity set up by parents Tristan and Claire Cork, in memory of their son Finnbar who they lost last year to a brain tumour sadly. The parents want to try and improve the care that children with brain tumours receive in Norfolk and East Anglia, as well as help fund research that may improve the outcome of the most deadly types of childhood brain tumour.

Tristan and Claire try to fundraise by giving people, especially families, something fun for their money. The Eaton Vale event on Sunday 10 September, from 11am to 4pm, promises to be fun as the whole centre will be open for everyone visiting to try the activities - such as abseiling, canoeing, archery and high ropes in return for a small charge (much cheaper than their standard prices), with all proceeds going to the charity.

There will also be a BBQ, music, a display ring, stalls and lots of other activities for all of the family to enjoy. It will be free to park and enter and participants can buy tokens to take part in activities.

GoGoCreate – The Learning Programme for GoGoHares 2018

GoGoHares 2018 is presented by Break charity in partnership with Wild in Art, an exciting new art trail for summer 2018. It follows the huge success of art trails GoGoGorillas in 2013 and GoGoDragons 2015 which attracted more than a million people to Norwich.

GoGoCreate, will offer a chance for schools, sports clubs and other community groups to get involved. The hare sculptures will be joined by smaller leaping leverets, decorated by children, which will star in their own trail for nine weeks during the summer. At the end of the trail the sculptures will be returned to your school or group for a lasting legacy of this unique project. The GoGoCreate trail will take place from 2 July until 2 September 2018 and the main GoGoHares trail will run from 24 June to 8 September 2018. Don’t miss out on this opportunity and sign up now with Pete Marron on 01603 670464, or 07799 210401, email peter.marron@break-charity.org or visit www.gogohares.co.uk

Norfolk Police Blog

Hello,

We hope you and your family have had a good summer and are looking forward to getting the most out of the back-to-school routine.

Your child’s name and you

A member of police staff has asked if we would point out the dangers of name stickers. You know the ones your child gets when they start new groups or schools? Please ensure that when you collect your child from their new settings that you remove these. By leaving them on it makes it far too easy for strangers to talk to them, especially if they are playing out of sight or in shopping centres. As quick to peel off as it is to put on could save yourself much anxiety. As both my husband and I worked shifts we had a password system with them so if anyone wanted to take them away from school or the playground that wasn’t close family, they needed to tell my children the password - if they didn’t know it, then they were to run and tell a teacher. Luckily this never happened but my kids knew what to do if it did.

Bike register

If a child loses their bike or it is stolen it can be very upsetting. This is usually resolved with a simple lock. We will be running a project in some high schools to highlight the importance of having one. As awareness begins at a younger age the Constabulary have attended some Playdays in Norwich that the City Council put on over the summer period. We have been registering children’s bikes with a label so if it gets lost and turns up, it can be quickly identified. Please ensure your child gets into the habit of ‘locking up’.

We wish your children happy and interesting days back at school.
