WaterAid invites schools to become Water Warriors and help transform lives

WaterAid is inviting schools across the UK to join the fight for clean water by transforming into Water Warriors and raising money for international charity WaterAid.

On or around 10 November, schools across the country are encouraged to organise a non-uniform day with a difference by dressing in blue and creating their own Water Warrior masks and shields. The charity has pulled together a free resource pack, complete with craft sessions and curriculum-linked activities to help pupils have fun whilst learning about the global water and sanitation crisis.

One in ten children across the world lack access to clean water, while one in three have nowhere safe to go to the toilet. Sadly, this doesn’t end when they go to school, with around one in three schools lacking these basic facilities, having a detrimental impact on the health and education on the students.

Just £100 is enough to set up a school health club to teach pupils about good hygiene and the importance of toilets, while £300 could buy three toolkits to fix taps, and £750 could put a new tapstand in a community. By improving access to clean water, good sanitation and hygiene, children can stay healthy and in school.

Imogen Hardman, from WaterAid’s Community Team, said: “We are so grateful for the support of schools around the UK who are raising money to help our life-saving work. For one in ten children around the world, it’s normal to have to walk to a muddy pond to collect water, and it’s normal to miss lessons because they are sick with diarrhoea from drinking this dirty water. Tragically, today like every other day, 800 children will die from diarrhoeal diseases caused by dirty water and poor sanitation, but Water Warriors across the country are helping change this. And we still need more schools to join the fight for water. Together, we can to get clean water and decent toilets to everyone, everywhere.”
