BOOKINGS LIVE FOR INTO FILM FESTIVAL 2017

WORLD’S BIGGEST YOUTH FILM FESTIVAL RETURNS WITH 3000 FREE SCREENINGS AND EVENTS, 8TH-24TH NOVEMBER 2017

“When I was growing up it was watching films that had the most profound and lasting effect on me. Films can allow us to see the world through the eyes of others, experience other cultures, other viewpoints, other lives. And, crucially, not just get an intellectual understanding but actually feel what it's like.”

Michael Sheen, Actor and Into Film Ambassador

Bookings open today for the Into Film Festival 2017 www.intofilm.org/festival – the world’s biggest, free, youth film festival, which takes place from November 8th to 24th with 3000 free screenings and events for 5-19 year-olds, many linked to subjects in the curriculum. Open to schools, colleges, youth leaders and home educators the Festival uses the magic of film – from exclusive preview screenings of new blockbusters to popular classics - to engage young minds in a broad range of topics. Mental health, anti-bullying and the environment will be key themes.

The Festival launches with a pupil premiere of star-studded sequel Paddington 2 at London’s Cineworld Leicester Square. It is hosted by Into Film as part of an on-going initiative to put film at the heart of young people’s learning and personal development, and made possible by support from the BFI, Cinema First, a wide collaboration with UK cinema industry partners and delivery partners National Schools Partnership.

Building on the success of last year, which saw over 470,000 people attend, this year’s Festival seeks to actively involve 500,000 young people and educators from all backgrounds and corners of the UK in watching, reviewing and making films, some for the first time. With support from all the major UK cinema chains and venues ranging from the British Library, the V&A, the BFI Southbank and Pinewood Studios to a secret bunker in Scotland, a farm in Wales, and a castle in Northern Ireland, the Festival provides access to the big screen at its best, including IMAX screens and the 3D and 4D experience. Over 130 films are confirmed to be screened in 600 venues across the UK – the Festival’s biggest reach yet.

The programme offers a wide range of film titles curated into six broad themes: Activate, Effecting Change; Let’s Play; No Borders, No Boundaries; Generation Z; History in Action; and Thriller. Chosen with educators in mind, these will address representation of diversity, and explore the many ways we can and do effect change, the value and innocent joy of creative play, and topical issues such as mental health, bullying, immigration, war and the environment. Just a few of the many highlights for Primary include: screenings of A Beautiful Planet 3D with talks by the UK Space Agency, Matilda Scratch and Sniff screenings, Revolting Ryhmes in English and Scottish Gaelic for Scottish audiences, the award-winning musical, Landfill Harmonic and Shakespeare with a difference, the acclaimed African Macbeth, Makibefo and A Carribean Dream based on A Midsummer Nights Dream.

Film titles will include blockbuster premieres alongside classics and hidden gems from the archive, spanning modern foreign language to documentary, animation and films adapted from books and plays. Mapped against curricula from across the four nations and regions, titles are supported by the Festival’s various educational resources featuring discussion questions, review starters and extension activities for use on the day and back in the classroom, where screenings can continue to serve as a stimulus for a variety of tasks. In response to teacher feedback many of the resources will this year, for the first time, be in PowerPoint format so teachers can adapt them to suit the needs of their students.

Films and resources can be used to support learning across a wealth of subject areas including PSHE, citizenship, English, geography, history, modern foreign languages, design and technology, and politics. A review writing competition provides added opportunity for using the Into Film Festival to support literacy and critical thinking.

Q&A’s with filmmakers including big names from across the industry, and talks by notable speakers on themes ranging from animation and reviewing to copyright, film classification and careers in the film industry, will offer further personal development opportunities for all 5 – 19 year olds. Special screenings will be on offer to support calendar events such as Anti-Bullying Week and Parliament Week, taking place during the Festival’s duration.

Accessibility and inclusivity are key aims of the Festival with over half of the programme offered as audio-described, subtitled or autism-friendly.

In a survey of teachers who attended last year, 94% of teachers said the Festival activities were useful in helping to deliver the curriculum, 94% of teachers felt the Festival activities were valuable in terms of the broader education of young people and 82% of teachers said that the Festival has made them more likely to use cinema visits to support the delivery of the curriculum.

I cannot state how wonderful this experience was for my pupils...I felt honoured to be able to take some of these children to the cinema for the first time. I believe this is a trip which they will remember and think back on for a very long time. I teach in a deprived area and this trip was very special for staff and pupils alike.” Teacher, Into Film Festival 2016
