WWF LAUNCHES WONKY VEG RECIPE CHALLENGE TO HELP SCHOOLS GO GREEN

WWF has launched a fun Wonky Veg Recipe Competition encouraging primary schools to learn more about sustainable food and how what we eat can have a huge impact, not just on our health – but also on the health of our planet.

Schools can enter the competition by signing up to Plant2Plate, in order to receive their free wonky veg seed kits and recipe card, to help inspire their growing journey.  As the planting season begins, pupils are encouraged to get growing and create a tasty recipe idea, themed around WWF’s Livewell principles for a healthy and sustainable diet.  The winning recipe will need to developed around the Livewell criteria and be as tasty as possible!  WWF Supporter and actor, Cel Spellman, who has been supporting the Plant2Plate campaign, will visit the winning school to find out how their wonky veg challenge began.

The winning school will also receive a half day visit and planting session from The Seed Pantry and a 12 month subscription for a grow club discovery box. Alpro will also host a special ‘Make and Taste’ workshop, where pupils will be able to devise their own healthy food creations using plant based food products.  Two other schools will be in with a chance of winning a fantastic runner up prize of a 6 month Seed Pantry grow club discovery box to help them continue on their Plant2Plate journey.

Cel Spellman said: “I spend a lot of my free time growing my own food in the allotment so it’s fantastic to see so many other young people learning about producing and consuming food in a sustainable way.  This is such a great competition where school children can learn hands on about where our food comes from and how a greener diet can have a positive impact on both us and our planet. It’s an important issue for children to learn about and the recipe challenge is a fun and engaging way for schools to get involved.”

The recipe challenge is part of WWF’s Plant2Plate initiative – sponsored by Alpro – and helps pupils explore food as a sustainability issue, whilst inspiring schools to get growing and cooking their own produce.

Kate Arthur, Head of Science & Nutrition at Alpro UK & Ireland, said: “At Alpro we believe that plant-based foods – whatever shape and size - are not just good for you but good for the planet as well and that’s why we’re delighted to be supporting WWF’s Plants2Plate initiative.  Encouraging schools to involve their pupils in growing veg is the perfect way to learn about food and we hope this project will also encourage children to put more plants on their plates too.”

WWF’s Plant2Plate initiative provides teachers with classroom resources and learning materials, encouraging pupils to grow and cook their own food at school.  The competition closes at 5pm on Wednesday 31st May 2017.
