HUNDREDS OF ASPIRING YOUNG CHEFS ENTER NATIONAL ‘RECI-PEA’ COMPETITION

Young Pea Chef of the Year competition, sponsored by Waitrose and Pro Cook, received hundreds of recipe entries in its second year

Ten children from across the UK have been selected as finalists in the 2017 Young Pea Chef of the Year competition, a national recipe competition which challenged children from reception through to Year 8, across two categories, to develop a delicious recipe using peas.

The Yes Peas! campaign, run by the British Growers Association, joined forces with Waitrose and ProCook to launch the 2017 Young Pea Chef of the Year competition, which received hundreds of entries from children across the UK this year.

A panel of industry experts, including TV chef Rachel Green and representatives from Waitrose, ProCook, the British Growers Association and Fen Peas, deliberated and tasted their way through the entries to shortlist just ten pea-inspired recipes.

Finalists hail from Stockport to Oxfordshire, Essex to Hexham, and recipes include Pea Noodles, Cheesy-Peasy Gyoza, Pea Soup with Almond and Chorizo Crumbs, Chicken Pea-Evs, Cumin and Pea Muffins, Pea and Sweetcorn Potato Fritters, Pea, Mint and Feta Raviolli, Pea, Parsley and Parmesan Risotto, Puff Pastry, Filled with a Creamy Smoked Bacon and Pea Sauce and Spicy Salmon Pie with Wild Ethiopian Flavours.

The next stage of the competition calls upon the public to show their support and vote for their favourite recipe. The young chef with the most votes from each age category (up to and including Year 6 and Years 7-8) will be crowned Young Pea Chef of the Year 2017 and will win £500 worth of cooking equipment each for their school from Waitrose and ProCook. All ten finalists will feature in a recipe e-book which will be distributed nationwide and available to download.

TV chef and Yes Peas! campaign ambassador, Rachel Green, said: “The level of entries we received from children across the country was outstanding and we’re delighted so many schools and families took the time to get creative in the kitchen and cook up their pea inspired recipes.

“Peas are incredibly nutritious and versatile and we hope that the competition will inspire many British children to see peas as an exciting and tasty ingredient. We’d like to congratulate all the finalists and wish them the best of luck in the final”.

Year 7 Ben Burton, from Chiltern Edge School, was selected as a finalist for his Puff Pastry, Filled with a Creamy Smoked Bacon and Pea Sauce recipe. He said; “I love cooking! So I wanted to do something that showed off what I have learnt. I'd like to have my own restaurant when I'm older and I think this dish could be on my starter menu."

Michael Simpson-Jones, Waitrose Frozen Food Buying Manager, said: "The quality of entries has been outstanding and we've been spoilt for choice when selecting the finalists. We've loved all the creative uses of the great British pea and I'm sure the recipes will inspire more young chefs to get cooking."
