St Andrew's Day

Edinburgh will be celebrating St Andrew’s Day in a buoyant fashion this November with a mix of storytelling events, traditional Scottish music, and food and drink markets offering street food and seasonal crafts from local makers.

St Andrew's Day marks the beginning of Scotland’s winter festivals. The Scottish Storytelling Centre will be hosting two fantastic Winter Warmer events to mark the occasion, namely at the Café Ceilidh: St. Andrew's Day Celebration on 29 November, which will feature traditional songs, music, poems and stories.

This will be closely followed by Light in The Dark on 30 November, embracing Scotland's multiculturalism through stories, music and dance.

A little bit about St Andrew

Scotland is one of the few countries to have one of Christ’s disciples as their patron saint. St Andrew is the Patron Saint of Scotland. He is also the Patron Saint of Greece, Russia, Barbados and Romania. On 30 November, 60AD, St Andrew is believed to have been crucified on a diagonal cross, a shape which provided the inspiration for the flag named after him. The flag is in the form of a white X on a blue background and is commonly known as The Saltire. St Andrew's Day is now celebrated each year on 30 November.
