Facsimile edition of 1945 children’s book, illustrated by East London Group founding member, Phyllis Bray

A gorgeous reissue of this classic tale, originally published in 1945 – the perfect introduction to Shakespeare for younger children, with a story based on the Bard’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Written by Jo Manton in a mix of prose interspersed with Shakespeare’s original verse, the story is illustrated with ethereal and mesmerising colour paintings by Phyllis Bray, one of the founder members of the famous East London Group of artists.

Titania, the Fairy Queen, and Oberon, King of the Fairies, fall into a quarrel about who should have charge of a little changeling boy. Oberon and his servant, Puck, cast a spell which causes Titania to fall magically in love with Nick Bottom, a weaver who has been given the head of a donkey by mischievous Puck. Thankfully, Oberon sees the error of his ways and seeks a way to reverse the spell and restore harmony.

Bray’s artwork perfectly captures the magic and mystery of the story, with an abundance of fairies, flora and fauna on every page.
