Teesside - Our School Trip to Big Sheep, Little Cow - North Yorkshire

The Trip to "Big Sheep, Little Cow" in North Yorkshire was an amazing experience for all the children in the Foundation stage (50 children aged 3-5). The trip consolidated our learning of our topic "on the Farm".

It gave the children a hands on experience of how to care for the animals that live on the farm and everyday life. The children thoroughly enjoyed feeding the lambs, stroking the pot bellied pig! holding baby chicks and feeding the ducks (which were called Jemimah, Puddle and Duck!) When they looked around the traditional farmhouse, there were all surprised that there wasn't a t.v, fridge or cooker! and were even more surprised when they found a mouse in a biscuit tin! however it turned out to be a friendly pet mouse. When stroking the pot bellied pig, everyone was amazed how rough and fat the pig was, not what they expected at all!!!!! All the children, staff and parents had a wonderful time and were enthused by the experience!

We have had a really exciting half term in the Foundation Stage, learning
about the Farm. We have had an incubator in class where we have been
hatching chicks.

Twice a day we had to turn the eggs and check the temperature to make sure it stayed at 40 degrees. The chicks hatched 21 days later and have now gone to live happily ever after on Mrs Halls farm. We had a visit from Snuff the baby Lamb. We all visited "Big Sheep, Little Cow" (50 children aged 3-5) we had a wonderful time consolidating our learning and developing our own knowledge and understanding. Charlotte (a member of staff there) had said that "all the children have a really good knowledge about the farm and its nice to see them all so enthusiastic". The trip was made possible by the kind and generous donation from Claytons a local business; they funded half the cost of the trip!

"The children have been thoroughly engaged with this topic, the children have gained so much knowledge and understanding which was aided through their hands on experiences. I am really grateful to Claytons for making the trip a reality, it was a magical experience for all who attended!” Emma Stephenson, Foundation Stage Leader.
