Classic plays recorded on DVD
A fantastic new teaching resource for schools making great drama available to students and theatre lovers all over the world!
"These plays are performed to a very high standard and are very interesting and entralling, and we are sure all students would enjoy watching these are part of their curriculum studies and by watching professional plays on stage opens up the theatre to many more people who would not normally get the chance either personally or through school to actually visit a live show. These shows should be utilised by all schools and made available for all to enjoy"
H McLean, Isle of Wight
Plays are written to be seen and heard, but for many schools and individuals, theatre trips can be difficult to organise and are expensive. And that’s assuming the play you want to see is being performed within travelling distance. But now, Stage on Screen is offering a real alternative by recording a wide range of classic theatre plays and distributing them on DVD. The first two plays were staged at Greenwich Theatre this October and were Marlowe’s Dr Faustus:
'Atmospheric...diabolically convincing...flashes of fiery poetry...directed with laudable clarity by Elizabeth Freestone' TIME OUT
And Sheridan’s The School for Scandal both on the GCSE syllabus:
‘It runs like clockwork – no, clockwork does not have its effervescence and one is totally unaware of the machinery of its carefully plotting. It is a delight!’ British Theatre Guide
With the success of Dr Faustus and The School for Scandal, Stage on Screen will be staging Ben Jonson’s comedy “Volpone” and John Webster’s tragedy “The Duchess of Malfi” this March and April at Greenwich Theatre. With the DVDs of the plays, both unabridged, teachers and students will be able to watch and study plays on the syllabus easily, conveniently and cost-effectively, and, thanks to the wealth of extras and study aids included in our teaching packs and on our website, get a real feel for the production.
Phil Rees Director of Stage on Screen said “Anyone doing English or drama wants to see the play that they are studying. We want people to come to the theatre but if you can’t, this shows what it is like sitting in the stalls.”
The plays produced will be predominantly chosen from the English, Theatre Studies and Drama GCSE and A level syllabuses, and will be staged and recorded at Greenwich Theatre, the award-winning South East London venue. The professional recording by Stage on Screen will be on High Definition Video and produced by the man behind Top of the Pops; Chris Cowey, to deliver the look and feel of a live performance. It uses six cameras and on-the-spot editing to bring the experience to life in the same way as he did at Top of the Pops. “I think the temptation for a drama director is to interfere, whereas I was about capturing the live theatrical experience,” Chris said “I did multi-camera directing for a living and it seemed the way to go with this.”
DVDs will be available via the Stage on Screen website www.stageonscreen.com. There will be three versions available: a Regular Pack for students and theatre lovers, a Library Pack for rental use and a 4-disc Teacher Pack, which includes an extras DVD and an interactive CD ROM that allows students to edit their own versions of key scenes.
