Tánaiste opens new €470,000 extension in Scoil Náisiúnta Fhionntra, Killybegs

The Tánaiste and Minister for Education and Skills, Mary Coughlan TD, today (Friday, May 21st) opened a new €470,000 extension in Scoil Náisiúnta Fhionntra, Fintra, Killybegs, Co Donegal.

The school was allocated €470,000 as part of the 2007 Small Schools Scheme, enabling it to build a new classroom, learning support room/library and a general purpose room with kitchen, toilets and storage room, and to refurbish the electrical installation and plumbing.

Speaking at the school, the Tánaiste said parents and the local community had worked tirelessly to progress the project.

‘This extension and refurbishment project would not have happened without the dedication and hard work of many people here today.

The school is well known for its extra-curricular activities such as athletics, football, drama and film-making.

‘Indeed, Fiantra National School was nominated for three awards at the National FÍS Film Festival in the Helix at DCU and received the 'Best Local Interest Film' award for their film 'Donegal Catch',' said the Tánaiste.

This Government continues to make substantial investment in education with more than €35 million having been directed into capital projects in Donegal since 2007.

The Tánaiste said the investment of €579 million in this year's school building programme demonstrated the Government’s desire to continue investing in the productive capacity of the economy, to create construction jobs and to provide schoolchildren and teachers with the best educational environment in which to learn and work.
