ActionAid launches new Chembakolli Resource

Following ActionAid’s award winning website Chembakolli.com, the international development agency has just launched another exciting teaching resource to extend Unit 10, A Village in India (QCA scheme ofwork).  The photo-pack and DVD, ‘From Bangalore to Chembakolli’ takes children on an fascinating journey through the diverse communities, cultures and landscape of south India – from booming Bangalore city to the remote village of Chembakolli.

Chembakolli is a village in a remote forested part of India which is studied by schoolchildren all over the UK as part of Key Stage 2 of the nationalcurriculum. This new resource aims to enrich children’s understanding further, by starting a journey in Bangalore and enabling pupils to experience the diversity and startling pace of change in southern India.

‘From Bangalore to Chembakolli’a journey through south India includes:

  • Teachers activity guide
  • 30 A4 stunning colour photographs with notes for discussion
  • DVD with 25 minutes of video in six sections
  • amendable powerpoint worksheets
  • printable photographs

Janet Convery, Head of Schools and Youth at ActionAid said: “This resource enhances all the other material available on Chembakolli so far, by showing India as a land of contrasts; urban and rural, rich and poor, traditional andmodern. Children will be able to see that the cities in southern India have some similarities to their own, with big shopping malls and modern glass buildings but they are still culturally rich with dazzling markets, sacred cows and children working as trapeze artists!

“Not many miles away, in the Niligiri Hills where Chembakolli is situated, life is more peaceful for the tribal Adivasi people. UK pupils will be given an all-round view of the region, will learn about the festivals and food and see how their peers live and work in both urban and rural settings.”

ActionAid closely collaborates with a local community organisation in Chembakolli called ACCORD to produce all educational materials on the area. 10% of all profits from subscriptions go directly to help the people of Chembakolli.

ActionAid has a range of multi media resources, photopacks and websites for the teaching of global geography, citizenship and education for sustainable development at both primary and secondary school levels.
