Hanna Barbera 1980’s animated series

Arrow Films / Fabulous Films have secured the Home Entertainment rights to the cult classic 1980’s Hanna-Barbera produced Smurfs cartoon series and the original 1976 feature film ‘The Smurfs and The Magic Flute’. The original series has never been available before on DVD in the UK.  Sony Pictures are currently in production of a $100 million live action/animated feature film that is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release in July 2011. It is being directed by Raja Gosnell (Scooby Doo, Scooby Doo –Monsters Unleashed, Big Momma’s House). The animated characters are being voiced by Katy Perry, Alan Cumming and Hank Azaria amongst others.

The Smurfs is a comic and television franchise centered on a fictional group of small blue creatures called Smurfs, created by and first introduced as a series of illustrated comic strips by the Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford (also known as Peyo) on October 23, 1958. Culliford's initial comic first appeared in the Belgian magazine Spirou, and several decades later was adapted into an English language children's television series by Hanna-Barbera Productions, titled The Smurfs.

Far, Far Away, in a little mushroom village live a group of little blue pixies in short trousers and white bonnets called Smurfs.  Only as tall as 3 apples, they speak in ‘Smurf’, a language only they understand.  The Smurfs are carefree, peaceful creatures that live in harmony with nature.  But they have a nasty habit of wanting to act like humans which causes them 1001 problems! 

The Smurfs are a worldwide smash and have been for a decades. Over 300 million Smurf Toys have been sold and 256 episodes of this series were produced over 9 seasons by Hanna Barbera. A truly defining animation series that continues to captivate generations of fans young and old.

Roger & Val Just Got In

A brand new comedy from the BBC, Roger and Val Have Just Got In will be available to own on DVD from September 13th 2010.

Alfred Molina (Spider-Man 2) and Dawn French (The Vicar of Dibley) star as the eponymous Roger and Val Stevenson, a middle aged married couple who we see during their first half hour after work once they walk through the front door. This touching, warm-hearted and bittersweet comedy examines the seemingly trivial domestic trials and tribulations faced by the couple, from finding a missing vacuum cleaner guarantee, to working out how to fit home-made lasagne into the already full fridge. Roger and Val explores the ‘fun in the mundanity’ of domestic life whilst also uncovering the complicated nature of relationships – by turns poignant, thought provoking and hilarious, you’ll be transfixed by the subtle developments and revelations as we follow them over several weeks of their life together.

Home for the Stevensons, on the surface at least, is a sanctuary of warmth, security with a bit of organised chaos thrown in. This is a great DVD that all the family will enjoy, it is still in the 2 issues as per the Sky showing, so its ideal if you dont want to watch it all in one go.  You will be pulled into the intrigue and mystery of this great film, and will be wondering what will be happening next.  Both my girls, 9 and 11, loved it and will watch it again and again, its an ideal family movie for all to enjoy.  And the more you watch the more you will see.  So dont delay order your copy now.

The dazzling TV adaptation of Terry Pratchett’s novel is released on DVD and Blu-ray 23rd August

The third Discworld novel to be brought to the small screen, Terry Pratchett’s Going Postal is available on DVD and Blu-ray from 23rd August. Released by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, the much-lauded satirical adaptation stars David Suchet and Richard Coyle.

The World at War

THE MOST INFLUENTIAL AWARD-WINNING DOCUMENTARY SERIES EVER PRODUCED‘THE WORLD AT WAR’ IS BEING RESTORED IN HIGH DEFINITION TO BE RELEASED IN TIME TO COMMEMORATE THE 70TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN

In the years since its initial broadcast, this BAFTA and Emmy award-winning series has had many imitators but ‘The World at War’ remains one of the most revered documentaries ever made. Now with the emergence of new technology, FremantleMedia are undertaking a comprehensive restoration project and will launch the series as it's never been seen or heard before. This painstaking restoration project is the largest of its kind for a television show, using exclusive machines of which there are only 2 in the world - a level of restoration is usually associated with major film studios' classic
titles. Each frame has been restored individually and the audio reconfigured and upgraded - on average each episode has over 140,000 fixes, making more than 3.6 million across the entire series!

Also included and restored are the special presentations, giving a total

running time of over 35 1/2 hours. Originally broadcast in 1973 and narrated by Sir Laurence Olivier, ‘The World at War’ was produced by Thames Television over a 4 year period. The 26-part documentary series interviewed major members of the Allied and Axis campaigns, civilian eyewitnesses, enlisted men, officers and politicians and made use of the rare colour film footage to investigate the events surrounding World War II to create what is widely agreed to be the definitive history of World War II. The production costs were, at the time, record-breaking in the UK.

Along with the restoration of the complete series, FremantleMedia are offering a number of new features, available for the first time - to include;
