Evolution Revolution
Robert Winston
£10.99, DK Ltd

**150th anniversary of On the Origin of Species** and ** Bicentenary of Darwin’s birth** OUT FEBRUARY 2009 2009 is the year of Evolution! Evolution Revolution by Robert Winston is published to coincide with both the 150th anniversary of On the Origin of Species by Charles Darwin and the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth. Bold, colourful, and innovative, Evolution Revolution tackles what has been described as the greatest idea in history with an engaging and accessible approach; an approach pioneered by other books in this successful award-winning children’s series. Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection was not just a great one; it was also beautifully simple and irresistible in its logic. In Evolution Revolution, Robert Winston sets out the elegant simplicity of a radical theory and shows how it brought about a profound revolution, not just in science but also in society, provoking a storm of controversy that continues unabated to this day. Far more than just a reference book, Evolution Revolution tells the fascinating and tragic story of Darwin’s life, from his conservative religious childhood to his adventurous round-the-world voyage as a young man and his life-long battle with ill health. Though catapulted to fame and notoriety by his incredible book, Darwin was in fact a shy and retiring doctor’s son who led a quiet life in a rural English village. Very much a family man and a doting father, he spent months caring for his daughter Annie after she contracted scarlet fever. Devastated by her death at the age of 10, his faith in religion faltered and he slowly gained the confidence needed to publish the book that would change the world. Lavishly illustrated with images, Evolution Revolution is a visual feast as well as a gripping story. Scientific ideas that might seem intimidating in a textbook are stripped to the bare bones, brought to life, and made fun and accessible. Also in the series: What Makes Me Me?, Think Of A Number, Can You Feel The Force? and It’s Elementary. ‘Everything your maths textbook isn’t. Brilliant’ - Sunday Times on Think Of A Number

The Big Book of Science Things to Make and Do
Leonie Pratt, Rebecca Gilpin
£9.99, Usborne Publishing Ltd

Top Prize for Junior Science Book Do science books have to be boring? Certainly not according to the Royal Society, the prestigious independent academy promoting the natural and applied sciences since it was founded in 1660. They have established a series of annual prizes for science books which includes one for the best junior science book. “The Usbourne Big Book of Science Things to Make and Do” has just been awarded the Royal Society Junior Prize for Science books. The result was announced at an awards ceremony at the Royal Society in London on the evening of Monday 16 June. One of the great things about this competition is that although a shortlist is drawn up by the Royal Society’s panel, the final decision is made exclusively by junior judging panels made up of almost 1200 young people over 120 school and youth groups from not just the UK but also children in Uganda, Tanzania, Cameroon, Thailand and Malaysia. The Big Book of Science Things to Make and Do is a fabulous bumper activity book which was designed to introduce children to the world of science in a practical and interactive way containing 57 exciting activities, including bubbling wizards brew, magic flowers, panpipe straws, a spinning paper helicopter and a light catcher. Each activity is described by step-by-step instructions, using simple and safe materials, and accompanied by simple explanations of the science involved, including density, air pressure, streamlining and power. But this isn’t just a craft book. All the activities demonstrate fundamental scientific concepts and bring them to life in interesting ways. The book was written by Rebecca Gilpin and Leonie Pratt. Leonie said: “It’s fabulous that something I worked so hard on and enjoyed so much has had so much recognition. It would have been impossible without Rebecca, my co-author, and without the tireless efforts of Usborne’s brilliant design team. It’s an amazing honour for our hardwork to be recognised by the Royal Society and young people – the people that will actually read and hopefully enjoy the book.” Two of the panellists told us what had made them select the book. Frankie aged 11 said: “This book is ace, we made the helicopters straight away, all the activities look fun and are dead easy to do, I would like to own this book.” Iona agreed, saying: “I wanted to read this book because of all the cool things you can make and I wanted to make them. This book helps you to learn about science but also helps you see what they are explaining by giving you activities to do.” Overall, we reckon that The Usborne Big Book of Science Things to Make and Do should be congratulated on the skilful way it has inspired children with science and, at the same time created a marvellous craft book for children. The Usborne Big Book of Science Things to Make and Do was written by Rebecca Gilpin and Leonie Pratt and published by Usborne (unsurprisingly!) and costs £9.99 from all good bookshops.

Wisdom Stories From Around The World
Retold by David Self
£8.99, Lion Children's Books

From the depths of the African jungle to the wide expanses of the American plains, storytellers have helped societies pass on their collective learning and wisdom as to how we can make the best decisions in life in order to live together in peace and harmony. Many of these stories have been retold countless times, with each generation adding their own wisdom to create stories that are just as alive as the communities in which they are still told. Now modern-day storyteller David Self has brought together insights and wisdom from many cultures around the world in this collection of 15 stories. The stories bring together learning from places including Afghanistan, Africa, America, Germany, India, Israel, Jamaica and Russia and deliver universally valuable messages - the importance of sharing; patience and perseverance; humility; caring for others; living peacefully together; the futility of arguing; and honesty - that show how people from every background can learn from one another. Sensitively retold with fittingly ethnic illustrations, these wisdom tales will be especially useful in any moral education context.
