But how do you know which type of dog will fit in with your family, and what safety measures do you need to be aware of when introducing your new pet to your precious new offspring? Angela Fitch is the author of The New Puppy Owner's Manual, published by How To Books. She has written a feature length article for parents about how to choose the right dog for your home and how to train a dog to know his or her place around the children. Commenting on her reasons for writing the article, Fitch says, "People are too quick to attach human emotions to a dog, especially if it is a cute puppy. But their needs are actually very simple. As pack animals they need to know who is leader and what they can and can't do, especially if you have small children in the house. From the outset the dog needs to learn that they are lower in the pecking order than the children and not on the same level just because they are similar sizes." About the author: Angela Fitch has been working with dogs for 10 years. She runs a busy dog training school, providing training and behavioural solutions for both puppies and adult dogs. Angela is passionate about educating owners in understanding, raising and living with dogs. She lives in Kent with her husband, two young sons and Max, their Chocolate Labrador. Her website is www.progressdogtraining.co.uk The New Puppy Owner's Manual is published by How To Books Ltd www.howtobooks.co.uk and is available at £9.99 in major bookshops and online retailers across the country.
The Big Field : a Child's Year Under the Southern Cross
Anne Morddel
£8.00, MorddelEditions

"The Big Field : a Child's Year Under the Southern Cross" is a lovely new picture book for all children and an important addition to the KS1 and KS2 curriculum. Patterned after books of hours, it is a month-by-month account of life on a farm at the edge of the Atlantic Rainforest in South America. Birds, flowers, butterflies and bugs abound in a warm and gentle story of three young children living on their grandmother's farm and learning from her the seasonal changes and simple nature activities that often mirror those of children in the northern hemisphere. The subtext of the grandmother's determination to reforest the big field of the title gives hope and a way forward to young children as they learn about nature in the modern world. No other book exists to introduce young children to the seasons and nature in this part of the southern hemisphere, and precious few are available to teachers to use in the classroom. The publication of "The Big Field" is accompanied by a detailed "Teachers' Guide" and two classroom posters.
RHS Wildlife Garden
Martyn Cox
£9.99, Dorling Kindersley

Publication Date: 2nd March 2009 Following the success of RHS Grow It, Eat It in Spring 2008, DK and the RHS are back combining their wide experience to produce another beautiful and inspiring book that will be loved by children and wildlife alike! RHS Wildlife Garden by Martyn Cox puts wildlife first. Providing habitats is increasingly important as many species are in decline, and the activities in this book allow children to help the environment as well as getting close to nature. By choosing the right plants and creating a suitable habitat in your backyard, they can invite some very interesting visitors to their plot. Build a home for a barn owl, get digging and see how worms are good for the soil, and welcome guests to a ladybird hotel. And even better, you don’t even need a garden: there are lots of exciting projects using pots and window boxes. Step-by-step projects include building a bird bath, a bee house, a bat box, and bird feeders, and other activities show how to track mammals and go pond dipping. There’s also a list of the Top 10 plants to attract butterflies, bees, and birds. The book ends with a photo-gallery of common garden creatures with information about each one, allowing children to identify the wildlife they see. RHS Wildlife Garden is not only full of fun projects to make and do, but is also highly educational as children learn about animal life cycles, pollination, and the basics of life on earth – all going on in their back gardens. Take a walk on the wild side and turn your garden into a haven for amazing wildlife.

Evolution Revolution
Robert Winston
£10.99, DK Ltd

**150th anniversary of On the Origin of Species** and ** Bicentenary of Darwin’s birth** 2009 is the year of Evolution! Evolution Revolution by Robert Winston is published to coincide with both the 150th anniversary of On the Origin of Species by Charles Darwin and the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth. Bold, colourful, and innovative, Evolution Revolution tackles what has been described as the greatest idea in history with an engaging and accessible approach; an approach pioneered by other books in this successful award-winning children’s series. Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection was not just a great one; it was also beautifully simple and irresistible in its logic. In Evolution Revolution, Robert Winston sets out the elegant simplicity of a radical theory and shows how it brought about a profound revolution, not just in science but also in society, provoking a storm of controversy that continues unabated to this day. Far more than just a reference book, Evolution Revolution tells the fascinating and tragic story of Darwin’s life, from his conservative religious childhood to his adventurous round-the-world voyage as a young man and his life-long battle with ill health. Though catapulted to fame and notoriety by his incredible book, Darwin was in fact a shy and retiring doctor’s son who led a quiet life in a rural English village. Very much a family man and a doting father, he spent months caring for his daughter Annie after she contracted scarlet fever. Devastated by her death at the age of 10, his faith in religion faltered and he slowly gained the confidence needed to publish the book that would change the world. Lavishly illustrated with images, Evolution Revolution is a visual feast as well as a gripping story. Scientific ideas that might seem intimidating in a textbook are stripped to the bare bones, brought to life, and made fun and accessible. Also in the series: What Makes Me Me?, Think Of A Number, Can You Feel The Force? and It’s Elementary. ‘Everything your maths textbook isn’t. Brilliant’ - Sunday Times on Think Of A Number

The Big Book of Science Things to Make and Do
Leonie Pratt, Rebecca Gilpin
£9.99, Usborne Publishing Ltd

Top Prize for Junior Science Book Do science books have to be boring? Certainly not according to the Royal Society, the prestigious independent academy promoting the natural and applied sciences since it was founded in 1660. They have established a series of annual prizes for science books which includes one for the best junior science book. “The Usbourne Big Book of Science Things to Make and Do” has just been awarded the Royal Society Junior Prize for Science books. The result was announced at an awards ceremony at the Royal Society in London on the evening of Monday 16 June. One of the great things about this competition is that although a shortlist is drawn up by the Royal Society’s panel, the final decision is made exclusively by junior judging panels made up of almost 1200 young people over 120 school and youth groups from not just the UK but also children in Uganda, Tanzania, Cameroon, Thailand and Malaysia. The Big Book of Science Things to Make and Do is a fabulous bumper activity book which was designed to introduce children to the world of science in a practical and interactive way containing 57 exciting activities, including bubbling wizards brew, magic flowers, panpipe straws, a spinning paper helicopter and a light catcher. Each activity is described by step-by-step instructions, using simple and safe materials, and accompanied by simple explanations of the science involved, including density, air pressure, streamlining and power. But this isn’t just a craft book. All the activities demonstrate fundamental scientific concepts and bring them to life in interesting ways. The book was written by Rebecca Gilpin and Leonie Pratt. Leonie said: “It’s fabulous that something I worked so hard on and enjoyed so much has had so much recognition. It would have been impossible without Rebecca, my co-author, and without the tireless efforts of Usborne’s brilliant design team. It’s an amazing honour for our hardwork to be recognised by the Royal Society and young people – the people that will actually read and hopefully enjoy the book.” Two of the panellists told us what had made them select the book. Frankie aged 11 said: “This book is ace, we made the helicopters straight away, all the activities look fun and are dead easy to do, I would like to own this book.” Iona agreed, saying: “I wanted to read this book because of all the cool things you can make and I wanted to make them. This book helps you to learn about science but also helps you see what they are explaining by giving you activities to do.” Overall, we reckon that The Usborne Big Book of Science Things to Make and Do should be congratulated on the skilful way it has inspired children with science and, at the same time created a marvellous craft book for children. The Usborne Big Book of Science Things to Make and Do was written by Rebecca Gilpin and Leonie Pratt and published by Usborne (unsurprisingly!) and costs £9.99 from all good bookshops.

Now modern-day storyteller David Self has brought together insights and wisdom from many cultures around the world in this collection of 15 stories. The stories bring together learning from places including Afghanistan, Africa, America, Germany, India, Israel, Jamaica and Russia and deliver universally valuable messages - the importance of sharing; patience and perseverance; humility; caring for others; living peacefully together; the futility of arguing; and honesty - that show how people from every background can learn from one another. Children think their earth matters. They’re aware that our planet is living on borrowed time. Printed using the greenest and most ethical production practices possible Earth Matters is a pertinent and positive message for what children can do. Without polemic, this book shows our planet’s landscape with stunning satellite-image clarity, revealing the real impact of climate change and what is happening to our earth. The book is bursting with practical and easy suggestions on how each and every one of us – adults as well as kids – can do something to help the planet, by saving energy or recycling. Simple things, from turning off taps, to watering the garden with washing up water; buying fair-trade products, or using paper that carries the FSC label (Forest Stewardship Council which encourages the responsible use of tropical timber).
