Ruinair
Paul Kilduff
€12.99, Gill & MacMillan

Stung by a ten-hour delay and a €300 fare to Spain on his native ‘low-fares’ airline, Paul Kilduff makes a plan — to fly to every country in the Ryanair network for the same total outlay. Armed with no more than 10kg of carry-on baggage, he endures 6 am departures, Six Nations-style boarding scrums, lengthy bus excursions, terminal anxiety and cabin crew who deliver famed 'customer service'. Kilduff travels to places he never knew he wanted to go to on a little Irish airline that flies from A to somewhere remotely near B, weighs baggage as if it were gold, charges passengers to stand in line or to use a wheelchair, sells them tap water and scratch cards, lands its aircraft at the wrong airport, takes court cases against its own pilots, allows you to win free flights that cost €55 — and doesn’t even care if you show up. The text is spliced with the wit and wisdom of Mick O’Leary, the only man who can out-swear Gordon Ramsay.

Publication date 16 July 2007 Unusual family holidays in the usual destinations Holidays with kids can so easily get stuck in a rut. It’s the same every year. A fortnight at the beach, or maybe a week in Disneyland. It’s all good fun, but childhood is the time to broaden their horizons and give them new experiences. Trouble is, you don’t want to do it at the expense of your sanity (or your bank balance) and you don’t know where to look for a holiday that will appeal to both you and the children, and won’t turn out to be a disaster. This is a super book and I think a must have for all parents with children, it covers the usual places but offers you a chance to try something different. Something you may have thought about but decided it’s not for us – well maybe it is. This book has all the contact details for all areas and activities and means you don’t need to hunt for ages to find the details of a specific activity which may put some people off trying it. I am going to use this book regularly when out and about with my family. It is a great buy. Review submitted by Heather McLean, 29.5.07
