Local Research Unit launch change of name
The Peninsula Cerebra Research Unit for Childhood Disability Research (PenCRU) is a research team based at the Peninsula Medical School in Exeter. You may have seen an article about it in a previous issue of Primary Times, but the unit has changed its name!
With core funding provided by the Cerebra charity, PenCRU carry out a broad programme of research that aims to improve the health and wellbeing of disabled children and their families. The unit works closely with families affected by childhood disability in all aspects of its research and related activities.
PenCRU is trying to expand its Family Faculty so that more families with children who have special needs and attend mainstream school are represented. If this applies to you do get in touch with them and find out about joining the Family Faculty. The British Art Show 7 comes to Plymouth: 17 September to 3 December

The British Art Show is held every five years, presenting new and recent works by contemporary artists based in Britain. This major exhibition is a unique opportunity to see an overview of current concerns in the art world and is generally considered to be a showcase of the very best in current British art. Tooth Fairy Fund to Help Plymouth Children
Around 250 families and young children in Plymouth are to receive help to improve their oral health, following a successful bid by Peninsula Dental School supported by NHS Plymouth.
The School is one of 12 organisations throughout the country which successfully bid for funding from oral health charity the British Dental Health Foundation and the Wrigley Tooth Fairy Fund. Peninsula’s project will offer support to eight children’s centres across Plymouth and provide a series of supervised brushing sessions and information packs for over 250 families with young children. The project will also train up 24 ‘Oral Health Ambassadors’ to help establish and run ‘Wild for Smiles Brushing Clubs’ and develop links with local dental practices. Cbeebies’ Boogie Pete joins in the fight against meningitis
Cbeebies’ Boogie Pete of Boogie Beebies fame has joined forces with national charity Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF) to feature in a DVD to get children moving and raise money to prevent meningitis and septicaemia. Priced at just £8 (including p&p), as well as being great fun, the DVD aims to raise awareness of meningitis and septicaemia in nurseries, pre-schools and playgroups, and amongst parents and carers of children in the age group most at risk of the disease.
