Why parents now fear science more than the ‘birds and the bees’ question
In years gone by, the question ‘where do babies come from?’ was enough to send most parents running for the hills, but in 2010 it seems we’re more likely to need a lie down when our children bombard us with questions like ‘why is the sky blue?’
In fact research shows nearly a third of all parents admit the colour of the sky leaves them flummoxed , while only 1% get sweaty palms when they have to explain to their children how they came into the world.
So why are we so worried about being put on the spot? Well it seems the reason for parents’ reluctance to discuss science with their children is because they are worried they don’t know enough about it.
With this in mind, what can you do to ensure you are armed with the right information when your little one comes knocking?
In order to prepare us, Shell, who commissioned the research, have released Activate, a free online booklet of kitchen sink experiments for parents to use with their children over the school holidays. And not only will your little ones stay occupied over the holidays but they will learn a few things too.
In the following podcast, Meg Post from The Shell Education Service and Rachel, mum of three, share some tips on how both you and your children can be super scientists.
