Homeowners urged to avoid taking risks when renovating

Watch our video to find out why cutting corners with DIY or rogue tradesmen could end up costing you more money in the long term

Research from Sainsbury's Home Insurance shows in the last five years Brits have wasted a staggering £4 billion rectifying dodgy building, electrical, plumbing and gas work - all carried out by cowboy traders.

Not only are botched jobs causing homeowners financial headaches to fix, using an unqualified or ill-equipped tradesperson to carry out the work could potentially invalidate their home insurance, which could mean they're unable to make a claim should anything go wrong with the work that's been carried out.

In the following video, Michael Holmes, Editor of ‘Real Homes’ Magazine advises on what you can, and should never, save money on when it comes to renovating and how to ensure you identify and select qualified tradesmen. Ben Tyte, Head of Sainsbury’s Home Insurance provides tips on how to make sure you’re covered by your home insurance from the start of your renovation right through to when you’re sitting back admiring the job.
