Stiletto Swimmers swim the Channel

The RNLI Helvick Lifeboat Station wish to thank and congratulate the Stiletto Swimmers on their fantastic achievement on swimming the English Channel from Dover to Calais in relay to raise funds for the Helvick Lifeboat.

The team are Clare Morrissey, Kolette Enright, Maeve Moran, Maura Murphy all from Dungarvan, Marie Barry from Carrick-on-Suir and Gráinne Burke from Hugginstown, Co Kilkenny.

They have been training for this supreme event for the past 10 months and were given the green light to begin the swim from Shakespeare Beach just outside the mouth of Dover Harbour at 10.20pm on August 11th and reached Wissant Beach east of Cap Gris-Nuz near Calais the following day in just under 16 hours.

“The swim was a tough challenge” said Clare Morrissey, “but our training stood us in good stead. There were rough rolling seas, though the temperature at 16– 18 degrees was warmer than Clonea”.

The Stilettos are regular participants of the annual RNLI Dungarvan Bay Sponsored Swim and everybody is welcome to greet them on Helvick Pier next Sunday August 22nd  at 3pm where the 16th Annual Sponsored Swim, BBQ & Family Fun Day is taking place in aid of the Helvick Lifeboat.

Clare Morrissey a former Hon Chairperson of The Dungarvan Fundraising Branch of the Helvick Lifeboat, is proud to have taken part in all of the sponsored swims to date.
