Give us your lunch money on ActionAid’s Child Poverty Day

On Friday 17 October, turn your lunch break into a big school dinner and help children all over the world have theirs.

23 June 2008: Friday 17 October 2008 is ActionAid’s Child Poverty Day and the international development charity is asking for your lunch money!

Instead of spending a lonely lunch at your desk or buying yet another dull and overpriced sandwich from the nearby supermarket, put a little fun back into your lunchtime. Log on to www.childpovertyday.org for all the information and a fundraising pack.

Simply bring your own packed lunch to work, or hold a traditional school dinner with friends or family (spotted dick or lumpy gravy optional), and then donate the money you usually spend on your lunch to ActionAid.

Working with millions of poor people and their communities all over the world, ActionAid is fighting to ensure that the poorest and most vulnerable children have access to life’s essentials, such as clean water, nourishing food, healthcare and education.  The charity doesn’t just hand out aid, it lobbies local and national governments to provide all children with access to free education and daily meals.

Andy John, Fundraising Officer at ActionAid said: “In a nation that spends millions of pounds on ready made sandwiches and fast food lunches everyday, simply donating the cost of one lunch can make a huge difference. By giving ActionAid your ‘dinner money’ on 17 October, you can help some of the world’s poorest children get access to the food and education they deserve.”

A little can go along way.:-

  • £5 is enough to provide nutritious porridge for an orphan in Malawi every day for a year – in some areas, this is the only guaranteed meal the children receive.
  • £10 could ensure that a child in Africa can get the rice, beans and maize they need for a whole week, helping them to grow up strong and healthy.
  • £60 could provide a nutritious meal for a street child, every night for a year at an ActionAid street shelter in Delhi, India.
