TOP TIPS FOR TEETH
From Dr Barry Cockcroft, Chief Dental Officer
BRUSHING
Brushing your teeth twice a day with a family strength fluoride toothpaste helps prevent tooth decay, gum disease and bad breath. Care must be taken to clean all surfaces of all teeth, including the gum line.
It’s best to use a toothbrush with a small head and soft or medium bristles and a handle which is comfortable to run less of a risk of damaging your teeth by brushing too hard
Powered brushes with an oscillating/rotating action clean teeth better than other designs
Spit out after brushing and do not rinse the mouth with water to allow the fluoride in toothpaste to stay on the teeth longer
Children should be helped or supervised by an adult until at least 7 years of age and should not be allowed to eat or lick toothpaste from the tube
LESS SUGAR
Cut down on the amount of sugar in foods and how often sugar is eaten
Only eat sugary foods at mealtimes
Limit food and drinks with added sugars to four times a day
VISIT
Make an appointment to visit your dentist regularly for check ups, even if you feel there isn’t anything wrong with your teeth, as this will help you to keep you teeth in their best condition and ensure that any conditions are identified before they cause problems for you.
Your dentist will advise you of how long you should leave between check ups.
