Epilepsy charity launches pioneering children’s seizure diary

A brand new seizure diary for children with epilepsy has been launched by The National Centre for Young People with Epilepsy (NCYPE).

The fantastic new diary has been especially designed for youngsters aged 5 to 10 and is filled with fun activities.

The first one of its kind in the UK, the diary has space for recording seizures in a fun way - a vital help to doctors in diagnosing and managing epilepsy.

It is full of pictures and cartoons donated by famous children’s illustrators including Lauren Child, Axel Scheffler and Aardman Animations. Nick Sharratt designed the lively front cover.

The diary came about when a mum of a child with epilepsy, Caroline Muir, attended the NCYPE's Families Conference in 2008. Caroline had the idea and spoke to NCYPE staff members about it. All agreed that it was indeed a fantastic idea, and set to work to make it a reality. Only a year later the diary is available to children all over the country.

“My daughter loves using the diary,” says Caroline, “It has really helped her take control of her feelings towards her epilepsy and opened our eyes up to things we never knew about it too – bringing us closer together.”

NCYPE Childhood Epilepsy Information Service Manager, Gill Gallagher adds, “We wanted something a child could take to school and which would look and feel like an ordinary diary. The information inside it helps children begin to understand that epilepsy is not who they are, but just a small part of their life as a whole. We’re delighted with the amazing support we’ve had from children’s authors and illustrators and could not have done it without them.”

Epilepsy is the most common serious neurological condition in the UK, affecting over 60,000 children. Most children attend mainstream schools, but some struggle with having seizures, as well as feelings such as ‘being different’ or ‘not normal’. Some are bullied and feel isolated and ostracised by peer groups. All this can have a significant impact on educational attainment.

The NCYPE is very proud to be tackling the issues that many children with epilepsy face through the launch of the new seizure diary. Thanks to the support of Sanofi Aventis, it is available free of charge by calling 01342 832243 ext. 296 or by emailing info@ncype.org.uk
