HELPING YOUR CHILD TO SUCCEED AT SCHOOL

For some children the start of a new school year gives a sense of familiarity and stability, however for others it can be a daunting time, which can bring anxiety.  This is particularly true if it is the start of a year that culminates in important exams.  Many pupils will feel nervous and pressurised as demands on them increase.

Whilst talking through problems, identifying troublesome subjects and asking a teacher for extra work can reduce anxiety, many parents are now looking beyond school for additional support in the form of supplementary education.

Kumon, one of the leading supplementary educational companies in the UK, offers maths and English programmes, designed to help each child to reach their potential.

The emphasis is on a long-term grounding in the fundamentals of maths and English (the 3Rs).  Kumon study gives childen the chance to get to grips with calculation skills and mental arithmetic without using calculators, and helps improve spelling and grammar, as well as encouraging a love of reading.  Each child is also given the all-important commodity of confidence and acquires independent learning skills.

Explaining the benefits of enrolling her sons onto Kumon’s programmes, Mrs. Nadir explains: “We have seen many benefits, including a marked improvement in their confidence and overall ability.  Kumon’s programmes have made a significant difference to our children’s progress and we believe has enabled them to develop both in a personal and academic capacity.”

Independent learning

So how exactly does Kumon work?  Kumon is an after-school worksheet based study programme.  Children in the local area will complete a short piece of work each day and visit the centre twice a week.  Kumon Instructors know their students well and set work for each child on an individual basis.

Students succeed through their own efforts at their pace, but parents also play an important role, by forming a strong partnership with the Instructor.  Work is tailored to each individual and the progression of study in the hands of each child.

In previous years parents may not have thought to look beyond school for supplementary help.  But today thousands simply see it as a natural part of being a parent.  Kumon’s step-by-step approach means the programmes are suitable for all ages and abilities.
