Homework - IT = Panic!

Would kids fail without modern technology?

The majority of British parents believe that technology such as home computers and printers are so ingrained in the everyday task of homework that their kids would fail without it.

According to new research, two in five parents (39%) say technology is vitally important to their child’s homework, as without it they would fall behind their classmates. Barely any parents (4%) say gadgets like laptops or the internet have no real use in their son or daughter’s studies, indicating how important it is for today’s families to have access to such technology.

While it might be the kids’ homework, the stress levels of parents also skyrocket when it comes to assignments being sent home. Whether it be working out tricky maths equations, printing out projects in time or checking for spelling and grammar, one in six parents (16%) say they too get stressed out about their child’s homework.

The survey by HP also shows that many mums and dads try to embrace technology, such as wireless printers, so they can keep up with their sons and daughters (47%), and a full third (35%) say a key reason for having modern technology in their home is to help their children succeed at school.

Forget printing holiday snaps on the digital camera or getting maps and directions off the interweb – the top reason for actually having a printer in the home is for kids to print off homework assignments (91%). Everyone knows how important it is to have aesthetically pleasing reports at work or for sales pitches, and these days it’s equally vital at school. Indeed, 76% of parents now feel that children need to print off their homework instead of writing it to get better marks.
