New illustrated guide to the literary and social history of Stoke Newington to be launched at the Stoke Newington Literary Festival

The unique and radical history of Stoke Newington is celebrated annually by the Stoke

Newington Literary Festival’s Pink Plaques - a series of pop-up markers installed to pinpoint places of historical, literary and cultural interest, both past and present. This year the scheme is to be complemented by a beautifully designed map featuring the locations of the pop-up plaques. The map will be available exclusively from Stoke Newington Literary Festival outlets in the week before the festival and then during the festival weekend itself Friday 3rd – Sunday 5th June, 2016.

Perfect for family groups as well as individuals, this year’s first edi;on features such luminaries as Daniel Defoe, Anna Laetitia Barbauld, Marc Bolan, Banksy and Mary Wollstonecraft. The trail, which was designed and produced by the artist-run initiative White Wall Yellow Door is suitable for all ages - from young children, who will enjoy the treasure hunt element of searching out the pink plaques, to art lovers interested in exploring the history of radicalism, political dissent, creativity and social reform that is still very much a part of the N16 community today.

Liz Vater from the Stoke Newington Literary Festival says: “We commissioned White Wall Yellow Door to produce the map with the aim of celebrating, promoting and inspiring visitors and residents to engage with the fascinating social, cultural and literary heritage of the area.

“The delightfully drawn map is centred around the local area and features locations associated with the many interesting literary, artistic and political figures who have lived or worked here through the generations. Aside from defining specific locations, the map will be annotated with details about these key figures, many of whose influence continues to be felt.

“We hope that both residents and visitors will enjoy wandering through the area and learning more about its past, and the inspiring and diverse people who have helped to shape this fascinating community.”
