School pupils draw their way to £100,000 energy makeover success

The winner and two runners up of British Gas’ Generation Green competition have been announced, winning £100,000 worth of energy makeovers for their schools.

Tansie Davies, age 9, from Burnham in Buckinghamshire has been announced the winner of the Smarter Power competition, winning an energy makeover for St Peter’s Church of England Primary School worth up to £50,000.

Emma Peon, age 9, from Putney in London and Hattie McAffer, age 10, from Manchester have won energy makeovers each worth up to £25,000 for Hotham Primary School and Chorlton Church of England Primary School.

The top three comic strips were selected by a panel of judges, including Nigel Parkinson, artist at world famous comic, The Beano.

More than 4,000 budding young artists from 123 schools across the country entered the Generation Green Smarter Power competition. Children aged 7-11 were asked to draw a cartoon showing British Gas mascot, Wilbur, demonstrating how to save energy with smart meters.

British Gas is leading the smart meter roll-out, and the Government wants every household to be offered smart meters by 2020.

With smart meters, people can see how much gas and electricity they are using and the cost in pounds and pence, which can help them take control of their energy use and lower their bills.

Energy makeover
The competition aimed to get children thinking creatively about how they use and save energy. The entries showed energy saving ideas, such as filling the kettle which the amount of water actually needed, having shorter showers and managing heating more effectively to save money.

The primary schools are set to be transformed with the latest energy-saving technology, such as solar panels, LED lighting and a new energy efficient boiler.

Nigel Parkinson said:  "It was very hard sifting through all the great entries, they all showed imagination, humour and talent. We had an exceptionally hard job whittling it down to the final few. Very well done to the winner and runners up, it was well deserved!"

Catherine O’Kelly leads the smart meter roll-out at British Gas and is one of the Generation Green judges. Catherine said: “Congratulations to Tansie, Hattie and Emma for being the winner and runners up in the Smarter Power competition and for winning an energy makeover for their schools. Their comic strips were lovely creative interpretations of saving energy with smart meters. Well done!”
