UK Children Plan to Re-Claim Their Streets

UK charity Sustrans is today launching a Dream Street design competition to see what children across the country would like to see on the street where they live.  The national competition, My Sustrans Dream Street, will encourage children to think about what they would like to see outside their front door, to make it safer and more attractive for them to get around by bike and on foot. Paul Osborne, Sustrans Director of School Travel comments, “Sustrans believes that every child should have the freedom from their front door to explore, play outdoors, and make their own way to school and beyond. We’re inviting young people aged 7 to 14 to get involved and tell us what kind of street they’d like to see to make it easier for them to travel independently.”

The competition runs until 31 October 2011 and will be judged by: Wayne Hemingway, designer and co-founder of fashion label Red or Dead and Hemingway Design, an award-winning agency for urban redevelopment schemes; Alan Pendlewood, Managing Director of Pendlewood, and Alex Allen, project director of Sustrans’ Liveable Neighborhoods. There are four top prizes up for grabs: Pitchup.com have provided two family holidays in camping pods at Westholme Estate and Abbey Farm Caravan Park for the two winning individual entry categories (Age 7-10 and 11-14), whilst winning school group entries will receive a Pendlewood Kew 3 outdoor classroom for the 11-14 category and a Hissing Sid Bench that encourages imaginative play and offers a friendly place to sit and relax for the winning 7-10 year olds.
