The Martial Arts Place

If you’re looking for an activity that will keep your kids both fit and entertained, The Martial Arts Place in Swiss Cottage runs fun kickboxing programmes with classes both after school and at weekends.

Its Little Monkeys classes are suitable for five-to-seven year olds, and have a well-structured syllabus that includes practical training such as fire and road safety, first aid and stranger awareness, as well as teaching basic martial arts and kickboxing skills.  For eight to 14 year olds, there’s The Martial Arts Place Juniors which focuses on punching, kicking and self-defence. All classes include a grading system that encourages self improvement and allows all the students’ progress to be monitored carefully. For all classes, the emphasis is placed on learning while having fun.

With regular attendance, both Little Monkeys and Juniors can benefit from a number of physical and mental improvements like better eye-hand coordination, concentration and discipline. Both programmes can help children to develop their ability to learn, build up fitness levels and master anti-bullying techniques.

If bullying is an issue that concerns you or your child, there is also a monthly anti-bullying class which will equip children with effective techniques to help address the problem. Russell Cronk, co-founder of The Martial Arts Place, explains that ‘the class has been created in response to parents of our younger students. Some of the children had experienced bulling of some kind while other parents simply wanted their children to have the skills that would stop them from becoming a victim in the first place’

The hour-long class teaches methods that will help diffuse a difficult situation with both verbal and non-verbal techniques. Co-Founder William Lai explains that ‘a child’s confidence and stance alone can help dissolve a situation before it actually flares up and it’s this type of strategy which we are keen to pass on’.

The action-packed class covers self-defence, too, and kids will come away feeling more confident, able to cope in a stressful situation and know where to ask for help if they are being bullied.

While it might not seem like the most obvious of places to hold a birthday party, with its large soft play space and unique twist on the traditional format, The Martial Arts Place also throws delightfully different kid’s parties.

The birthday girl or boy can invite up to 20 friends (from five-to-eight years old) to join them for one hour of highly-energetic fun and capers. Instructors put the kids through their paces with a session of team games, which include an obstacle course and space hopper races, as well as a chance to spend some time on the punch bags. All the games, while stimulating and exhilarating, are also designed to help the children develop their balance and hand-eye co-ordination, and create team bonding. There’s plenty of room for the children to run around, make loads of noise and let off steam, plus a piñata to smash to smithereens!

All classes at The Martial Arts Place are taught by expert professionals in a safe and friendly environment. All ages and abilities are welcome and there’s a free taster session so your little one can give it a try.
