EVERYONE’S GOING QUACKERS
Winter set in and snow covered the forest in a thick white blanket. Many animals preferred to sleep through the long cold months. Badgers, beavers, rabbits, all sorts of animals snored their way through the winter. Even the birds cowered from the cold. All but two.
Twin brothers Dominic and Damian were too restless to sleep. The young ducks were two cheeky chaps. They loved to chase along the river, playing all sorts of games.
By now, a large coat of ice had frozen the river and they followed the migrating ducks to the bank to rest, but they too restless. Dominic and Damian started to chase one another across the icy river and laughed as they skated on the slippery ice, but out of the reeds a sinister character appeared.
Big Adam crept out and began to smile. “Ah, just in time,” he cackled, “Dinnertime.”
Beads of sweat spread across Damian’s forehead. “What are we to do now?” he said, “Big Adam will certainly want to eat us.”
Dominic smiled. “Do not worry, brother,” he said. “I have a game we can play.”
“A game?” Damian roared, “are you crazy? This is no time for fun. An alligator is about to eat us!”
Dominic laughed. “Do not be afraid, my dear brother,” he said. “This game will be perfect. We will get the better of rotten Big Adam. Wait and see.”
They waited and waited. Damian grew weary and sighed. “This game is not much fun,” he said, “and Big Adam is still chewing with those big teeth of his.”
“Ssh,” Dominic giggled. “I can hear some-one coming.”
“Good afternoon, Adam,” the voice greeted the alligator. “How are you today?”
Adam opened his big mouth to speak. “QUACK!!!” came from deep inside his throat.
The stranger could not believe it. What an odd sound from an alligator. “You do not sound well, Adam,” the stranger told him.
“QUACK!!” Adam answered.
Damian and Dominic laughed and continued their prank. The stranger ambled away and Adam was left puzzled. What had happened to his voice? He suddenly remembered the snack deep inside mouth and he began to chew again. Then he spotted something much tastier. Daphne, she would be a delicious dinner.
Adam’s mouth opened and Daphne gaped in horror. The big alligator grew closer and closer when Daphne noticed to the ducks stook inside Adam’s jaws.
“What are you doing inside an alligator’s mouth?” she gasped.
“Waiting to be eaten,” Damian giggled. “Big Adam gobbled us up while we were playing a game.”
Daphne scowled. “Well, that will teach you,” she said sternly. “You should watch where you play in future. Come out of there at once!!”
The two little seemed rather sheepish and stepped out of Big Adam’s wide jaws. “You won’t try to eat us again, will you, Adam?” Dominic asked.
Big Adam laughed. “No, I don’t suppose,” he said. “I’ve already gone quackers.”
“I think Everyone’s Going Quackers,” Damian giggled.
Maybe Everyone Is Going Quackers.
Including me.
