“There is nothing quite the look on a young child’s face when they put their face in water, blow bubbles and realise that learning to swim really is possible” So says Carol Taylor a local authority swimming coach based in the North.
It is perhaps the one hobby where being a “pushy parent” is essential because swimming is more than just a hobby it’s also a life skill providing increased opportunities and giving children a great sense of achievement.
The primary benefit of having confidence in water is of course safety with the ability to survive in potentially life threatening situations however there are many other advantages for the accomplished swimmer. You can to join in exciting water sports while some of us look longingly from the beach; it is a great way to stay fit as well and popular way to combat the stresses of life. It gives children the opportunity to join swimming clubs and look forward to hours of fun at aqua parks and swimming parties.
Mastering the ability to swim can also have a positive effect on child’s overall self confidence helping them realise that they have the capacity to learn new skills.
Starting early is encouraged but most local authorities provide a range of lessons at their leisure centres accommodating all ages and abilities. Duckling and Cygnets groups usually indicate special lessons for babies and toddlers where they are encouraged to enjoy the water and get used to being splashed.
Accredited teachers follow a National Swimming Plan which ensures that achievement level standards are recognised nationally. There are 12 grades taking you through from beginners to advanced progressing to Bronze Silver and Gold. Badges and certificates are available so children have tangible record of their progress. Prices vary between the authorities from around £3.30 to £4.50 per lesson and you usually book for a twelve week block in advance.
Swimming is a wonderful way to help broaden your child’s life choices so why not check out your local authority web site for details of the facilities near you.
