The poem below was written by an 11 year old called Katie Fowler of Alphington Primary School, Exeter, Devon. Her class has been learning about pollution and writing poems linking into the topic.

The River’s Story

Reflecting over my past I remember carrying frosty leaves through reeds and my first glimpse of the mills’ churning sails.

Spider webs rippled across my skin like jewels.

Brightening the suns rays into shallow bends,

I decorated my body in frozen threads.

Trudging though crimson moonbeams,

discovering treasure wherever I flowed.

Shriveled into a trickle of scum I am forced to abandon dependent mouths.

Unattractive poison is what they think of me.

The oozy monster has finally caught up with me.

Twigs pull on my skin.

Bubbles of grease and slime provoke me.

Dirt drowns the blood red leaves: I feel like yesterday’s rubbish.

Children come and find me if you wish, I am your inheritance.

Look but don’t be fooled by my appearance of calm.

Smell the dry and bitter air that hovers above me.

Think! I am a gift to you; stopping my flow will only hurt your kind.

Live in the pain that I am feeling and you will surely suffer.

You know my fate is clearer then the sun and moon.

Please understand the pain of my crisis.
