Captain Flinn and the Pirates
Edinburgh Fringe Children's Show review
Set in a primary school gym hall, the action in this sequel to the original Captain Flinn adaptation convincingly portrays the energetic enthusiasm of seven year old children for two perennial favourite topics; dinosaurs and pirates.
Using the traditional school play props of gym benches and basketball hoops, the story sweeps us out to sea where 3 vegetarian dinosaurs have been surviving on sausages under the comical tyranny of their Captain T Rex. To free his friends from this pirate crew, Captain Flinn embarks on a quest to find the magic cutlass. Much high energy action ensues when all parties realise that this cutlass grants not fishes, but wishes!
A mix of comedy and tension lead to a satisfying and rather surprising ending. This performance is full of creative drama, puppetry, songs and dance. The costumes are wonderfully inventive and attention-grabbing. Very young audience members may need an extra reassuring cuddle at times as Captain T Rex cuts an imposing figure. The shining eyes and smiling faces of all around me were confirmation of a job very well done by the cast of this very entertaining production.
