Return to Work - Edinburgh

Returning to Work? Where to find help

Now it’s Your Turn!

School is back and perhaps the youngest is now enrolled in school or baba settled into a nursery routine but, whether you’ve only taken a few months off work, or a few years, returning to work is never easy. Being a working mum needn't be stressful and there are parallels between toddler tantrums and office politics!

Not sure where to start?

The first thing you need to do is to weigh up what you want to do, consider a career change, how you want to work and whether you are ready to go back. It’s best to plunge back in with 100% certainty as motivations for working often change after having family. Seek out some advice from the national career service. Part-time Courses

The PCT Partnership runs a part-time course dedicated to women returning to work which might be just what you need to help you painlessly make the transition from home to the workplace.

The Women Returning to Work course, based in Edinburgh, has been running successfully for over 20 years and helped thousands of mums return to work part-time or full-time.

The course helps to work out your skills, write your CV and applications forms, reviews your IT skills and prepares you for interview questioning. This is all carried out in small group and in a safe and supportive way with funded places by Skills Development Scotland being offered to women who live in the Edinburgh area and have been away from work for 13 weeks or more.

Returnships

Professional networks like Women Returners offer higher-level paid internships for returning senior professionals. Coaching, consulting and network organisations like this specialise in helping professional women back to work after a long career break (longer than maternity leave). Programme partners like RBS ComeBack are active on this portal for local opportunities. Sign up to the network at: www.womenreturners.com

Smart Works!

Smart Works Edinburgh is an Edinburgh-based charity which offers low income women, who need clothes and interview preparation to fulfil their dreams of a return to work. Interview outfits can be provided from a stock of high quality clothing donated by the public, local businesses and retailers. Clothes have a huge impact on how we are perceived by others, particularly when meeting people for the first time and feeling good and comfortable at interview can really boost your confidence. For a friendly service visit: www.smartworks.org.uk

Skill Optimising/Parenting Skills

Don’t forget to draw upon your parenting skills in any application - after all, it’s not as if you have been at home doing nothing for the last months/years! Many of the skills you have learnt are precisely those which employers want – multi-tasking, people management, diplomacy, team-working…

Good Luck and let us know how you get on!
