Creative activities for children at Polwhele
Children at Polwhele House, Truro created an artistic welcome for visitors to their school’s open morning in February. To catch the eye of prospective parents the children created a giant mural depicting various aspects of Polwhele life in colourful and imaginative fashion.
The novel representation, measuring 40ft x 3ft, took three months to create.  It is the product of an ad hoc after-school mural club involving a dozen seven to thirteen year-olds.
Under the guidance of Claire Richmond, Head of Art and DT, the mural’s prominent features include musical notes, butterflies and wild birds reflecting Polwhele’s beautiful countryside location, and images depicting the school’s outstanding achievements.

Cook for the Queen!

Win the opportunity for your school to prepare a special Diamond Jubilee menu for Her Majesty The Queen at Buckingham Palace!

To celebrate the Diamond Jubilee British Food Fortnight is inviting all schools in the UK to create a special menu featuring recipes that celebrate the best of British to be served to The Queen and The Duchess of Cornwall at a reception at Buckingham Palace in June.

The winning schools will be invited to Buckingham Palace to see their recipes brought to life and help serve them at a reception attended by The Queen and The Duchess of Cornwall.

How to take part

Taking part is easy.  All schools have to do is design a menu fit for The Queen that celebrates the food produced in your part of the country.  Include both savoury and sweet ideas and dishes that use ingredients that strongly represent your region.  All your dishes need to be easily produced in the form of canapés that will be served at the reception.  For example, mini Toad in the Holes, little Cornish pasties, Smoked Haddock fishcakes, Bubble and Squeak, Pan Haggerty, Cromer Crab salad, Caerphilly tart, seasonal vegetable soup espresso or apple dumplings.  Remember that many traditional recipes celebrate our Royal family: Duke of Cambridge Tart, Coronation Chicken and, of course, Queen of Puddings!

You may also like to use ‘Cook for The Queen’ as an opportunity to organise some fun Diamond Jubilee celebrations in your school.

The top four winning schools will be invited to Buckingham Palace in June to see their menus prepared by Palace staff and the famous Buckingham Palace Head Chef. They will help serve their winning dishes at a special Diamond Jubilee reception attended by The Queen and The Duchess of Cornwall.

Who can take part?

The competition is open to 10 – 15 year olds in all primary and secondary schools in the UK.

How to Enter

Complete the online entry form on www.lovebritishfood.co.uk. Entries need to be submitted by Monday 30th April.
